KJOF

The purpose of the Komati River basin Development Project is to assure water availability in order to promote economic development. The core function of KOBWA is to effectively and efficiently operate the Komati River System in accordance with the operating rules agreed by the Parties. Key to the realization of the objectives of the project is the timely and sustained delivery of water of the Parties and this is the responsibility of the System Operation (SO) unit. The main tasks of the SO include:

  • Evaluating the hydrology of the Komati Basin in order to determine water availability:
  • Developing and implementing decision support systems to optimize water allocation/supply to the Parties;
  • Effecting water supply rationing when necessary;
  • Developing and applying a water resources accounting system to determine the amounts of water used and/or "banked" by the Parties and;
  • Facilitating communication and discussions between KOBWA and stakeholders on system operation, which is done through the Komati Joint Operation Forum (KJOF)
