SANDF and KOBWA officials pose for a group photograph at the conclusion of the Driekoppies Dam tour and stakeholder engagement session
On 9 September 2026, the Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA) had the pleasure of hosting members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) through the Joint Tactical Headquarters Mpumalanga Warrant Officers Training Programme at the KOBWA Driekoppies Office. The visit brought together more than 40 Warrant Officers who were undertaking a learning and development programme designed to expose participants to key institutions and strategic infrastructure that contribute to national interests and regional development.

Acting Operations Director, Mr Thabo Mahlobo, welcomes members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to the KOBWA Driekoppies Office
The visit provided an excellent opportunity for the participants to gain valuable insight into KOBWA's mandate, operations, and strategic role in the management and development of transboundary water resources shared between the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Republic of South Africa as well as the Republic of Mozambique. Through a series of presentations and discussions, the delegates were introduced to KOBWA's history, institutional framework, operational functions, and its contribution to water security, agricultural development, environmental sustainability, and socio-economic growth within the Komati River Basin.

During the engagement, participants received an overview of KOBWA's key projects and initiatives, including the operation and management of major water infrastructure and the Authority's efforts to ensure the equitable and sustainable utilization of water resources. Discussions also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in addressing water-related challenges and supporting long-term development objectives in both countries.
A major highlight of the visit was the guided tour of Driekoppies Dam, where the delegates were afforded an opportunity to observe firsthand the infrastructure and operational processes associated with one of the region's key water storage facilities. The tour provided detailed insight into the dam's design, operation, maintenance requirements, and its critical role in supporting irrigation schemes, water supply, and economic development within Mpumalanga Province and surrounding areas.

KOBWA was honoured to host the SANDF delegation and values the opportunity to contribute to the professional development and capacity-building of members of the South African National Defence Force. Such engagements strengthen collaboration between institutions and promote a broader appreciation of the strategic importance of water resources management.
